A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; ÂŁ2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.
The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations domestically and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This most recent purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his own record another time.
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants nationwide.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a positive way after tasting something so lucky as the year begins," said one happy diner.
