Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.
One male and one female were arrested at the scene and another man who fled following the incident was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.
âThis moment calls for sorrow,â said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings triggered the blast.
âUpon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,â provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.
âA gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,â he explained.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.
The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
The prosecutor thought the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a âdeliberate and pre-planned murderâ. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had ânoticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being openedâ.
âEveryone was aware the circumstances were severe,â nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to âdetonate the propertyâ rather than vacate the property.
âThe blast resulted in a âhorrific, deeply distressing and tragic costâ.â
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
