The economist stated he would step back from public duties after legislative body released his repeated communications with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their development".

Summers, who once headed Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public messages demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization stated it accepted Summers' decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.

Political Context

This announcement comes after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a bill that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its files on the case.

The legislation will afterward move to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. He has stated he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those people.

The messages revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to prominent international personalities.

Personal Response

After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers said he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to restore faith and mend relationships with the people closest to me".

Career Background

The professor occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He headed Harvard from five years and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that he was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.

Summers joined the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
