The Heartbreaking Transformation a Single Year Has Brought in the US

One year ago, the environment was completely distinct. Before the US presidential election, reflective Americans could acknowledge the nation's significant faults – its injustices and inequality – yet they still could identify it as America. A democracy. A country where the rule of law carried weight. A state headed by a dignified and ethical public servant, even with his older age and declining health.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us hardly identify the country we inhabit. People believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into vans, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his opponents or alleged foes and requesting the justice department transfer an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The military command, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – liberated itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of what could amount to close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, law firms, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are treated like nobility.

“The US, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “Ultimately, swifter than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone our nation is, and the speed at which it unfolded.

Yet, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling initial presidency and following the alerts linked to the understanding of Project 2025 – following the president personally declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat solely at the start – enough Americans elected him instead of the other candidate.

While alarming as the current reality is, it’s even scarier to realize that we’re only nine months into this administration. How will an additional three years of this deterioration leave us? And suppose that period becomes a more extended duration, as there is nobody to restrain this president from deciding that additional tenure is necessary, perhaps for security concerns?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There will be midterm elections in 2026 that may establish an alternate balance of power, if Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. There exist elected officials who are striving to exert some accountability, for example representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election three years from now could start the path toward restoration just as the prior selection placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are numerous residents protesting in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or during the Vietnam war protests or throughout the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

Reich says he recognizes the signals of that revival and sees it happening now. As evidence, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, bipartisan pushback against a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to sign the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity always remains asleep before certain corruption becomes so noxious, some action so contemptuous toward public welfare, some brutality so noisy, that it is forced other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries persist: will the nation regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing in the world and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we must try, by any means available.

Personally, as a media critic, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more fully, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with political races, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we lived in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is to attempt to persevere.
